Introduction to Casyopee

Casyopee (Symbolic Calculation offering possibilities for student and teacher) is a software allowing to study analytical or algebraic problems at upper secondary level. The emphasis is put on the properties of real functions (or of families of functions) and on  dynamic exploration and symbolic proof approaches, and on modelling real life situations.. It is designed so that algebraic manipulation is not anymore an obstacle for students. It is an environment where  algebraic modeling is made easier for  students.

Extended possibilities of parametrization allow the teacher to adapt the use of software to his/her pedagogical objectives. The characteristics of this software are the following:

  •  Functionalities of a graphing calculator (window, table, trace…)
  •  Symbolic calculation ( factorizing, developping, differentiating…)
  • Possibility of justifying a sign, the intervals of monotonicity, the existence of exact and approximate solution of an equation...
  • Possibility to deal with problems containing parameters.
  • A dynamic geometry window with standard geometrical constructions.
  • A "geometrical calculation" window dealing with measures in the dynamic geometry window and (automatic) creation of functions to model dependencies between measures.
  • Historic of actions in a NotePad that can be edited and saved as an htmll file..

Unlike standard  symbolic calculation software, Casyopee manages mathematlically objects of varied types: functions, expressions, variable, parameters and objects in the dynamic geometry window. Casyopee manages the equivalence of formulae for different functions and a list of characteristic values of the variable of functions (solutions, boundariess of interval of definition, forbidden values). This management and treatment are carried out by a symbolic kernel which is not directly accessible to the student. The student encounters therefore the symbolic calculation (not only its power but also its limit)  by interacting with Casyopee.
